Theology Thoughts

Easter will get Here Soon Enough

I wrote briefly about this on Facebook, but I’d figure for this first blog post, I would make a longer post about the topic.  In the Lutheran Church we, like the Roman Catholics, the Anglicans, and other like church bodies, use what we call the church calendar. This Calendar helps frame our life around the faith and the birth, life, death, resurrection, and

teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. The year is broken into seasons that cause us to reflect on these truths, teachings, and events, in the life and ministry of Christ. These seasons do not last a single day, they are at least 12 days in length, this goes for Lent and Easter.

Lent is a 45-day season, we typically say 40, but that is because technically Sundays don’t count. In this season, we are to be reflective on our human nature in which we see how sinful we are and how we rely too much on the things of this world and are in need of the things of Christ. We need every day of this season, for the sake of humility and the opportunity for discipline that season affords us, as well, the opportunity to be thankful for the more joyous sounds of our liturgy that we put aside for over a month.

This then brings us to Easter. Easter is a 50-day season. Note, first of all, that it is longer than Lent. We get to spend more time being reminded that sin and death have been defeated and that we will be rescued from these things. We will be in joyous celebration of Christ’s resurrection, we will be emboldened to join with Mary Magdalene, Peter and John, and all the witnesses of the resurrection to share witness of Christ’s resurrection and how it will on the last day be our own.

Easter is a great season and I look forward to sharing it with you all, but let’s not put out the Easter decorations just yet, let Palm Sunday and Holy Week and the end of Lent have its place.

Christ blessings
